For a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.
1 Cor 16:9 — The Apostle Paul
As always, I greet you in the spirit of divine opportunity and collaboration.
If I asked you to cite one of the most influential universities in the world (next to Tulane of course), which university would you cite? If you answered Harvard University, you would probably be correct. More presidents and government leaders have come from this university than any other.
Did you know Harvard was founded for a Christian purpose?
Take a few moments to read its founding charter. Harvard University was founded in 1636 with the intention of establishing a school to train Christian ministers. In accordance with that vision, Harvard’s “Rules and Precepts,” adopted in 1646, stated (original spelling and Scriptural references retained):
“1. Let every Student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well, the maine end of his life and studies is, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life (John 17:3) and therefore to lay Christ in the bottome, as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and Learning. And seeing the Lord only giveth wisedome, Let every one seriously set himself by prayer in secret to seeke it of him (Prov. 2:3).
2. Every one shall so exercise himselfe in reading the Scriptures twice a day, that he shall be ready to give such an account of his proficiency therein, both in Theoreticall observations of Language and Logick, and in practical and spiritual truths, as his Tutor shall require, according to his ability; seeing the entrance of the word giveth light, it giveth understanding to the simple (Psalm 119:130).”
The motto of the University adopted in 1692 was “Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae” which translated from Latin means “Truth for Christ and the Church.” This phrase can be found embedded on the Harvard Shield and on many buildings around campus including the Widener library, Memorial Church, and various dorms in Harvard Yard. Interestingly, the top two books on the shield are face up while the bottom book is face down. This symbolizes the limits of reason, and the need for God’s revelation.
Today, even though, Harvard is known as one of the most influential universities in America and around the world, many Kingdom minded Christ-followers on campus have not exorcised their right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to assembly as an effort to create open dialogue and conversation about faith in society.
Recently a graduate student felt a leading of the Lord to host a Kingdom marketplace conference on social transformation. As a result, I was invited to speak on social transformation through business and entrepreneurship.
Little did he realize the level of opposition that would come against him. It wasn’t long before this conference was met with real opposition from on-campus and off-campus groups and students that are seeking to prevent the event from taking place. This group has been effective at causing the administration to question the merits of such an event.
We believe the root of this concern is simply fear and a lack of insight on the purpose of this conference and how spirituality can be utilized in education, economics, government, the arts and entertainment, and culture.
We need your help to insure this conference moves forward successfully on April 1 and 2.
Our host is a Godly young man and his wife who have sacrificed greatly to see this event happen. With limited funds and limited support, we have come along side him to help see that this event happens. But, we need a large number of people to help us make this event a reality. We want the administration of the school to see the Kingdom community support this event in a big way!
This event in no way seeks to convey any negative message about any group, but to simply encourage young men and women to fulfill their God-given calling and divine purpose in everything they do in life.
There are a 2 ways you can help us make this event successful. But we need you to act today!
1) Register for the event and come to support it. A limited number of non-students will be allowed to participate so please register now if you would like to attend in person. If you are a Pastor in the Boston, Massachusetts area, please consider registering your young adults to attend.
2) Register for the web-streaming TODAY PLEASE to give our host some seed money to address the new issues related to hosting a successful event. It will also show early activity for the leadership of the school. Even if you do not plan to watch via streaming video, consider this a donation toward impacting Harvard for their greater good of all its students. They need to see support of the event. You will hear some interesting and engaging dialogue and watch history in the making! We believe this event could be a catalyst to re-open the spiritual conversation and dialogue at Harvard University and institutions of higher learning throughout the world.
As the Apostle Paul states above, the greater you impact the power centers of the world, the greater the adversary will oppose you. Remember, our adversary is never people, but spiritual principalities and forces. We believe this is what is happening, but we also believe God is greater than any adversary. Please, stand with us to impact this important institution for Christ.
Thanks for standing with us.
